Extension Privacy Policy

This policy explains how the NeutralEye browser extension collects, uses, stores, and shares user data. It applies to all users of the NeutralEye Chrome extension.

Chrome Web Store User Data Policy compliance

NeutralEye's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Specifically:

  1. The extension uses user data only to provide the user-facing article bias analysis feature described in the Chrome Web Store listing.
  2. The extension does not transfer user data to third parties except (a) as necessary to provide the bias analysis feature, (b) for security purposes, or (c) to comply with applicable laws.
  3. The extension does not use or transfer user data for serving advertisements, including retargeting, personalized, or interest-based advertising.
  4. The extension does not use or transfer user data to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes.
  5. Human access to user data occurs only when necessary for security/abuse investigation, legal compliance, or when the user provides affirmative consent. No routine human review of submitted content occurs.

What Data The Extension Collects

When you click the NeutralEye extension icon and request an analysis, the extension collects the following data:

Collected automatically from the active page

  • Article text: The readable body text extracted from the active tab's DOM.
  • Page URL: The URL of the page you are viewing.
  • Page metadata: The article headline, author name, and publication date, if present in the page's HTML meta tags.

Collected if you sign in

  • Email address: The email address you enter to sign in to your NeutralEye account.
  • Password: Your password is transmitted to our authentication server during sign-in. It is not stored in the extension or on our servers in plain text.
  • Authentication tokens: An access token and refresh token returned by our server after sign-in, stored locally in the extension to keep you signed in.

Generated by the service

  • Analysis results: Bias direction, confidence score, summary, driver labels, example quotes, and source recommendations returned by the analysis.

What Data The Extension Does Not Collect

  • The extension does not collect browsing history.
  • The extension does not run in the background or monitor pages you visit.
  • The extension does not collect data from any page until you click the extension icon and initiate an analysis.
  • The extension does not read cookies, form inputs, passwords from web pages, or any data unrelated to the article text.
  • The extension does not collect financial, health, or other categories of sensitive personal information.
  • The extension does not track your activity across websites.

How Data Is Used

Each type of collected data is used for a specific purpose:

  • Article text, page URL, and page metadata are sent to NeutralEye's analysis server, which forwards the article text to an AI language model (OpenAI) to generate a bias analysis. The page URL is used to exclude the source publication from the list of recommended alternative sources.
  • Email address and authentication tokens are used to authenticate your account, enforce daily usage limits, and save analysis results to your cloud history.
  • Analysis results are displayed in the extension popup. If you are signed in, results are also saved to your NeutralEye account for access in your analysis history.

All data usage is directly related to providing the bias analysis feature. No data is used for purposes unrelated to this feature.

How Data Is Shared With Third Parties

The extension shares user data with the following third-party service providers, solely to deliver the bias analysis feature:

  • OpenAI(AI analysis provider): Article text is sent to OpenAI's API to generate the bias analysis. OpenAI processes the text to produce the analysis result. OpenAI's data usage is governed by OpenAI's API data usage policy.
  • Supabase(authentication and database provider): If you sign in, your email address, account ID, and saved analysis results are stored in Supabase's cloud database. Supabase's data handling is governed by Supabase's privacy policy.
  • Vercel(hosting provider): API requests pass through Vercel's infrastructure, which hosts NeutralEye's backend. Vercel may process request metadata (IP address, timestamps) as part of its hosting service.

We do not sell, rent, or trade user data to any third party. We do not share user data with data brokers, advertising networks, or analytics platforms.

Data Storage

User data is stored in two locations:

Local browser storage (on your device)

The following data is stored locally in your browser using Chrome's extension storage API (chrome.storage.local):

  • Authentication tokens (access token, refresh token) if you are signed in.
  • Your email address for display in the extension popup.
  • Token expiration timestamp.

This data stays on your device. You can remove it by signing out within the extension, clearing your browser data, or uninstalling the extension.

Server-side storage (NeutralEye's servers)

If you are signed in, the following data is stored on NeutralEye's servers (hosted by Supabase):

  • Your email address and account ID.
  • Analysis results (bias direction, confidence, summary, driver labels, example quotes, source recommendations) linked to your account.
  • The URL and title of analyzed articles, stored as part of the analysis record.
  • Daily usage count for rate limiting.

If you use the extension without signing in, no user data is stored on our servers. The analysis request is processed, the result is returned to your browser, and no record is retained.

Data Retention

  • Locally stored data remains in your browser until you sign out, clear browser storage, or uninstall the extension.
  • Account data and saved analyses are retained for as long as your NeutralEye account is active. When you delete your account, all associated data (email, saved analyses, usage records) is permanently deleted from our servers.
  • Server-side operational records (error logs, security logs) are retained only as long as reasonably necessary for security, debugging, and legal compliance, and are then deleted.
  • Anonymous analysis requests (from users who are not signed in) are not stored on our servers after the response is returned.

When Data Is Collected

Data collection occurs only when you click the NeutralEye extension icon and initiate an analysis. The extension does not collect any data in the background, does not run on page load, and does not monitor your browsing activity. The activeTab permission grants the extension temporary access to the current page only when you click the extension icon.

Permissions

The extension requests the following browser permissions:

  • activeTab: Grants temporary access to the content of the tab you are viewing, only when you click the extension icon. This permission does not allow background access to any page.
  • scripting: Allows the extension to inject a content script into the active tab to extract article text when you request an analysis.
  • storage: Allows the extension to save authentication tokens and settings locally in your browser.

The extension does not request access to all websites, browsing history, bookmarks, downloads, or any other browser data.

Accounts And Authentication

The extension supports optional sign-in for users with a NeutralEye account. Signing in is not required to use the extension. If you sign in, your email and password are sent securely over HTTPS to NeutralEye's authentication server (powered by Supabase). An authentication token is returned and stored locally in the extension. The token is used to identify your account on subsequent analysis requests. Signed-in users have a shared daily usage limit across the extension and website. Sign-up is available on the NeutralEye website only; the extension supports sign-in only.

Security

All data transmitted between the extension and NeutralEye's servers is encrypted in transit using HTTPS/TLS. Authentication tokens are stored locally using Chrome's extension storage API. Server-side data is stored in access-controlled, encrypted cloud infrastructure provided by Supabase. We use reasonable technical and organizational safeguards to protect user data. No online service can guarantee absolute security.

Your Choices And Rights

  • You choose when to run an analysis — the extension never collects data without your action.
  • You can use the extension without signing in. No account is required.
  • You can sign out at any time to remove your authentication tokens from the extension.
  • You can uninstall the extension at any time to remove all locally stored data.
  • You can request deletion of your NeutralEye account and all associated data by contacting us at legal@tryneutraleye.com.
  • You can avoid analyzing pages containing private, sensitive, or confidential content.

Changes To This Policy

We may update this policy as the extension or service changes. The updated policy will be posted on this page with a new “Last updated” date. If we make material changes that affect how user data is collected, used, or shared, we will update the Chrome Web Store listing accordingly.
